VLADIVOSTOK, Dec 9 (PRIME) -- The Russian authorities expect construction of 49 more fish plants in the Sakhalin Island and the Kuril Islands, doubling the amount to around 100, Federal Fisheries Agency’s Head Ilya Shestakov told reporters on Thursday.
“Taking into account the fact that there is a large amount of plants in the Sakhalin Island and the Kuril Islands, we are considering a further program for construction of about 49 plants more, meaning that the combined amount of breeding plants will stand at around 100. We understand that the Sakhalin Island will follow suit of our colleagues (in Japan) here,” he said.
Japan catches almost no wild salmon, their entire salmon catch is the fish bred and released into the wild, he said.
“For the Kamchatka Region, only five plants were built there during the Soviet times, and the share of plant-bred salmon here is not as big, this is why we think that is very important to take this way so that the Kamchatka Region remains a region where salmon would reproduce only in the natural breeding grounds,” he said.
